Creating Your Sacred Space

Our surroundings can have a negative or positive influence on our inner world. Spending time in a quiet, comfortable space invites the body and mind to relax and rinse away any tensions we may carry. One's home, office, or personal space should be treated as a temple. This space does not have to be big to create the perfect temple; it can be the corner of a room or simply a place at the end of the bed. Playing soft, calming music, reciting mantras and prayers, burning a light incense, and cleansing your space with sage are a few examples to help raise the vibrations of your home. Filling your space with high vibrational energy will make any place you occupy feel like home.

Your external space is an extension of your innermost authentic self. It displays your unique interests and can even indicate what’s going on in your inner world. A clean home can allow the flow of energy in your space and mind/body. You know that delightful feeling you get in your body after you've finished cleaning your home and lighting your candles? That’s the release of stagnant energy, welcoming in a feeling of calm and bliss.

Find a comfortable and quiet space

It can be a room or a small corner of a room; no matter the size, it has the ability to be transformed into a place of peace. You can start by adding comfortable pillows to sit on with a warm, soft blanket. Include a few candles for a glowing ambiance and some plants to add life and help in cleaning the air of toxins. Bless this space to become a sanctuary of calm and a place to wash away troubles.

Careful Company

It is important to be conscious of the energy you allow into your sacred space. It would be ideal to only allow those that speak life, expansion, and high value. Inviting this vibrant energy into our sacred space, home, and inner circle nurtures inspiration, creativity, and compassion within us. The company we keep is a direct reflection of our inner world and how we truly view ourselves. When we allow company around us that spews hate, jealousy, and controversy; we are lowering ourselves to that frequency, and we become a reflection of that. This is certainly not what you would like to invite into your sacred space. Take a moment to reflect on the company you keep in your life. Ask yourself, how does the company I keep influence my progression?

Play calming music

The tempo of the music can influence our heart rate. Our bodies relax with music that is a slower tempo. Try listening to classical music, flutes, nature sounds, and singing bowls, just to name a few. Find a balance between listening to music with and without words. If a song has words, make sure the lyrics positively influence your thoughts and mood. Avoid music promoting violence in your sacred space.

Add Plants into your Space

Plants bring life into your home. Certain plants purify the air and are proven to be instant mood boosters. Be sure to pick uniquely shaped and vibrant colored plants and flowers. Buying yourself flowers to place in your home is a direct act of self-care. I enjoy having beautiful flower arrangements greeting me as soon as I walk into my home. Flowers have traditionally been given to brighten the mood of someone who is sick or grieving. Roses are given to our special someone or to celebrate an accomplishment like graduation. Make it a tradition to always have beautiful, thriving plants and flowers in your home. If you find that you are not a person "with a green thumb," you can have artificial plants instead. Although artificial plants will not purify the air as real plants would, they can still lift your mood. I make sure to have at least one plant in each room of my home.

The Use of Colors

Using color can add instant vibrancy and playfulness to any dull space. Color therapy, for example, is a common practice. In marketing, it is common for companies to use color science when advertising. If certain colors promote certain emotions, take a moment and look around your space. What colors do you have in your space? What emotions do they invoke? Add a pop of color in a place where you normally wouldn’t. You can add a bright-colored throw blanket, pillow, or an art piece, to just name a few.

Burn Incense

Incense burning is commonly used for religious and sacred ceremonies because of its significant influence on the senses and energy of the room. The light therapeutic fragrance calms the mind, relaxes the body, pleasantly alters mood, and increases focus. Incorporating incense in our meditations can boost effectiveness when used strategically. When focusing on a specific chakra during meditation, I recommend using incense that stimulates the flow of energy in the chakra.

Smudging

The burning of sage and other sacred herbs is rooted in Native American tradition. It is burned to clear a space or environment of negative energy and welcome wisdom, clarity, and promote healing. There are many herbs that are used for different cleansing purposes.

How to Smudge Your Home

Begin at your front door. Light the sage and allow the smoke to form. Set your intentions into the sage. For example, “I release all that no longer serves me and my home. Love, understanding, and growth live in this space.” Walk around the circumference of your space softly chanting these intentions. Open the windows and imagine all negative thoughts and energies going out the window, allowing your space to fill with a more luminous, loving energy.

Set Intentions

Manifestation is the result of setting conscious and meaningful intentions accompanied by direct action. All of the tiny impactful decisions made throughout the day must be done with intention. Proper intention setting comes from a place of presence, clarity, and alignment. Presence is needed to connect with the needs of the now. The Law of karma teaches us that for every action, there is a reaction. If you wish to see your future, simply observe the actions you are taking now. The most critical reason why you must always move with intention is clarity. Clarity means having a clear vision of what is needed in each present moment to nurture and build your desired outcome. Alignment means raising the vibration of self, the environment, and experiences to match that of what you wish to attract. Life without purpose behind our actions causes chaos and a complete loss of direction. Intentions are your driving force to live a life of mindfulness and fulfillment.

Imagine your ideal sacred space. Visualize the design, smell the fragrance of this special place, hear the soft music dancing in the background. Place yourself in that moment where you are in peaceful and natural ease. Sit with this visualization and feel the emotions and feeling of fulfillment arise in your body. Smile at the satisfaction of having achieved this perfect, sacred space.
